I'm looking here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58174
to find info for the firmware version that your iMac needs. So, looks like you need version 4.1.9. In your original post you said:

OK, having assembled Disk Warrior, downloaded the Firmware update and as many application upgrades, etc. and burned the downloads to a CD, I was going to go for Jaguar this morning.

So, sounds like you have already downloaded this (?) firmware update version, right? Also sounds like you have burned the update to a CD. Are you trying to do the update by running off the CD?

No, the firmware update I downloaded and burned to a CD for easier transport to the iBook from the iMac was 4.1.7, because that's what the Apple site told me was the right firmware for my model iBook and iMac (see my sig file for details). However, before attempting to run it, I copied it to the desktop from the burn CD.

I note that the Apple article referenced above says this:
_____________________________________________________________

The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with slot-loading CD, DVD or CD-RW drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions.

So, firmware update cannot be run from a CD, right? Is it possible that this is the source of your problem?

The iBook's product information differs slightly in the Boot Rom version: $0003.33f3, and in the serial number/sales order number areas.

I'll take a look at iBook firmware info when I get a chance. I gather that you are getting the same error message when trying to do the update here, too, right?

Well, the error message I get says I have to run either 9.0 or 9.1. The iBook is running 9.2.2. But the firmware updater won't progress past the error window telling me about 9.0 or 9.1. And I think the 4.1.9 update is for G4's, isn't it? Mine are both G3s.

Per the suggestion of another person, I even checked the OSX DVD I bought to see if there was an updater, but no joy.
