I'm looking here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58174
to find info for the firmware version that your iMac needs. So, looks like you need version 4.1.9.

No, the firmware update I downloaded and burned to a CD for easier transport to the iBook from the iMac was 4.1.7, because that's what the Apple site told me was the right firmware for my model iBook and iMac (see my sig file for details).

Did you look at the Apple article referenced above? It indicates that your iMac requires Firmware Update 4.1.9. (And has a link for the download.)

This article shows the same info for your iMac:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
and also shows that your iBook requires update 4.1.7.

However, before attempting to run it, I copied it to the desktop from the burn CD.

You might try d/loading the correct update for your iMac and running that off your HD.

I'll take a look at iBook firmware info when I get a chance. I gather that you are getting the same error message when trying to do the update here, too, right?

Well, the error message I get says I have to run either 9.0 or 9.1. The iBook is running 9.2.2. But the firmware updater won't progress past the error window telling me about 9.0 or 9.1.

Hmm, well I would first try downloading the 4.1.7 update to your iBook, and then running that, just in case it does not like your CD copy version.

And I think the 4.1.9 update is for G4's, isn't it? Mine are both G3s.

No, G4 iMacs do not require firmware updates.

FWIW, there are "issues" with regard to firmware updates on machines with incompatible operating systems, but I would advise making the attempts as outlined above before getting into the OS thing.
