If I do a clean install of 8.5 & then re-upgrade to 8.6, do I have to do all the firmware installs again?
No, you shouldn't have to change firmware again. The firmware is actually stored in a chip, not on your disk, so it's unaffected by what version of the OS you have.
Apple is pretty good about telling you if you have to upgrade the firmware, too.
