>Is the computer dusty or in need of cleaning ??? Nope
>Anything blocking upper or lower vents ??? Nope >Is there a chance that it is powering down because it is getting too >hot ??? Possible, but unlikely to be temperature related failure so much as temperature related original damage. Temperature is not well controlled in the environment it is in currently. The problem first cropped up over the summer, where it wasn't unusual for the iMac to be in a 95 degree room. I figured the regular summer heating just did in the power supply. Its now winter, where the room is normally 50 degrees, and the failure still occurs. So it isn't likely to be shutting off due to heat, but could very well have been damaged orignally due to heat and is now just shutting of because of the damage that has already been done. >Does it ever power down within the first half-hour of starting up cold >or does it ONLY happen after several hours of use ??? No real pattern. It may run for a few days without issue, or it may power off 3 times in an hour. I went so far as to put a monitoring system on my PC to see when the iMac was up and down to see if I could see a pattern, but there is none. It appears to be totally random when it turns off. I think I'll just go with my first assessment, that the power supply is dying and will eventually need to be replaced (when it won't power on any more I'll worry about replacing it). >By all means get a new PRAM battery but I have never head of a desktop >Mac actually shutting down because of a dying PRAM battery. I didn't think the battery would influence it, but I figured I'd check to see if anyone knew something I didn't. My guess is the battery was actually drained because of the regular power failures. I never turn off my iMac, but now due to the failures, it is off probably 80% of its idle time, which will cause the battery to actually be used on a regular basis, and thus drain it. I have spare batteries, so I'll probably replace it tonight. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
