In Mail, you have your pile of mail in the upper half of the window ("half" being adjustable). Double-clicking one of these messages will indeed cause it to open in another window. However, instead of the double-click thing, a single click will cause the chosen/highlighted message to open in the lower half of the originally-mentioned window. Just an up arrow or down arrow will cause you to scroll through this list of messages. No closing one message before opening another. Then, hit "delete" and the highlighted/opened message will delete and cause the next message to appear in its place. If you've clicked "Mailboxes" to open that tray on one side or the other (sort of a sidebar), you can drag and drop the messages from that upper half panel to any box or folder in the sidebar.
Is there a way to switch focus to the drawer without using the mouse? I can't find one.
