That should work just fine.
Keep in mind that the port-based firewall in the AirPort is about the minimum level firewall they make...
So what would be a good set up, I have the 480 that's one connection coming out and the airport extreme what would you add that I could get at my preferable online store. when it comes to networks, I can find no common ground of agreement.
Yer probably fine with what you've got. It really all depends on your personal needs and how much protection you desire.
If you have a pure Mac environment, then the port-based filters in a device like AirPort are probably ample. But if you run PCs or are paranoid like me, then you might want a more sophisticated firewall.
Basic setup is something like this:
WAN <-> Router/Firewall <-> LAN & WAPs <-> Macs, PCs, Servers, etc.
WAN = Cable, DSL, Satellite, POTS, bonded whatever, etc.
LAN = Your home ethernet.
WAP = Wireless Access Point - AirPort, LinkSys, D-Link, etc.
Router/Firewall = A used Cisco box works fine, likewise a *nix/Linux box, but my real pref is for an old Mac outfitted with an extra NIC or two[*], running OS 9 or X and IPNetRouter and IPNetSentry, etc. It provides routing, NAT, DHCP, and firewall services. It can also provide DNS, SMTP, etc.
An added bonus: The Mac-based router has extra capacity! So you can use it as a home file, http, ftp, print server...
[*] Expandability. You can really get carried away! LOL Most of the routers I've built are PowerMac 7300's, but current home router is a 7100/66. It has two extra NICs installed. Comcast (WAN) goes into the built-in NIC. Then one of the NuBus NICs feeds our house LAN. The other feeds our neighbor's LAN (temp cat5 between the houses; his satellite setup is down). *And* I'm running Apple's LocalTalk Bridge software, so an old Performa can surf via PhoneNet.
