On my sisters' 333Mhz(don't know what rev.) when I put a 256 chip,
which I had previously checked to make sure was the correct kind, and
installed it properly. And though it would allow the installation of
panther, once the installation was finished the overall performance was
worse than when it had been running 9.

That isn't neccessarily true. I'm successfully running 512 MB on three
Rev A bondi iMacs now.
The keys that I found are 1: make sure you get exactly the correct kind
of RAM for the iMac (some newer chips have a higher density), and 2:
make
sure you aren't shorting out the pins on any of the chips on the ram
card. The ram retaining clips on some of the iMacs had metal clips, and
due to more chips being packed onto a 256 MB ram card, those metal
retaining clips can touch the pins on the memory chips and short them
out. My findings showed that sometimes the iMac would ignore the entire
ram card, other times it just wouldn't see the whole amount of RAM.
A bit of electrical tape insulated the pins and stopped the problem.
