Hi Brian,
the culprit is 10.4.2. It installs 3 dodgy extensions,
AppleAirport.kext, Apple Aiport2.kext and AppleAirport3.kext.
As seems to be the case with increasing frequency, Apple these days
is screwing up big time with their incremental upgrades. I sometimes
wonder whether we are dealing with a bunch of amateur programmers...
Anyway, the Apple Discussion board has several messages from
desperate users reporting problems similar to yours.
Whatever you do, DO NOT INSTALL AIRPORT 4.2!
If you have done it, following previous advice on this list, you need
to reinstall the Airport Firmware 5.5.1.
What happens is that 10.4.2 mucks up Airport on the client computer.
Airport 4.2 mucks up the AEBS, so you lose connectivity throughout
the network.
So, the solution for AEBS is go back to 5.5.1.
The solution to your problem is copying from the other computers on
your network running 10.4.1 the AppleAirport.kext and
AppleAirport2.kext and pasting them into System/Library/Extensions,
after having trashed the three extensions listed above (you'll need
administrator privileges for this procedure).
Hope this helps,
Walter
(very annoyed at having wasted half a day's work sorting out this
problem after okaying Software Update's misleading offer to keep up
with the latest from Cupertino)

Subject: Airport dead?

Having issues connecting to an airport extreme base station with a
iMac DV SE 400 mHz (10.4.2, 640 mb RAM, 160 gig HD).
it sees the airport card as active but no longer sees the AEBS (yes,
it used to see the network, it suddenly stopped seeing it this
morning). I've connected other computers to the AEBS with no
problem, the iMac is the only one that doesn't work anymore.
I can't seem to find the iMac through any networking means other than
ethernet right now. IS this a symptom that the airport card is fried?
