Well, perhaps I am screwed. The extensions you so kindly provided
don't seem to want to take. I get an error message on start up that
says they were improperly installed and to install them again, which,
of course, does no good.
THE AEBS is already updated to 5.6, this is part of the problem.
Keep in mind, when an update comes out I typically update wholesale,
and try to get everything in one shot, since I have limited time to
do this, so I jsut get it all out of the way at once so I don't
forget to in the future.
Still, though, my dad's iBook might still be on OS 10.4.1 now that I
think of it, since I haven't been able to touch that in weeks. It
seems to be working perfectly though, as far as i know.

Hi Brian,
I see. Here's a link to a kind soul who put the needed Airport
extensions on a zip file.
<http://fabounio.free.fr/bidouille/airport.zip>
[I got it in one of the Apple Discussion Boards, namely: <http://
discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b4598e/1>]
Download the file, expand it and move the extensions to the System/
Library/Extension folders as per procedure described in my previous
message. Repair permissions before restarting, or they won't work!
Opinions are divided as to what to do next: you may see how things
go with just this move. Or you may decide to upgrade to Airport 4.2
anyway - the claim is that it is 10.4.2 that updates those
extensions. If you upgrade to Airport 4.2 what you must avoid doing
is allow the Airport Admin Utility to upload the new Firmware 5.6
to the AEBS. That will mess things up big time.
Another tip: if you see your Airport connection cycling in and out
and the bars drop to 2 and less, it helps a lot to launch the Admin
Utility (do not let it upload 5.6 though!), then under the 'Mode'
dropdown menu, instead of the default 802.11b/g compatible, choose
the one that you need (i.e., the one that suits the Airport cards
you have installed on your computers; hopefully, they all are of
the same type?). Since changing to '802.11b Only', I'm getting
consistently powerful signal even downstairs.
Good luck!

Unfortunately 10.4.2 is already on all tiger machines, so I'm
kinda stuck there. WIth no 10.4.1 machines, and the base station
updated, what do I do?
