Brian,
from what you say, you simply forgot to repair permission before
restarting.
Run repair permission from Disk Utility, restart and you wont' get
the error message you report again.
As for the 5.5.1 firmware, try the following:

I was exactly in your situation and by doing what I have described
I've sorted matter out. But you must follow my instructions to the
letter... (repair permissions!) -:)

Well, perhaps I am screwed. The extensions you so kindly provided
don't seem to want to take. I get an error message on start up that
says they were improperly installed and to install them again,
which, of course, does no good.
THE AEBS is already updated to 5.6, this is part of the problem.
Keep in mind, when an update comes out I typically update
wholesale, and try to get everything in one shot, since I have
limited time to do this, so I jsut get it all out of the way at
once so I don't forget to in the future.
Still, though, my dad's iBook might still be on OS 10.4.1 now that
I think of it, since I haven't been able to touch that in weeks. It
seems to be working perfectly though, as far as i know.
