Megamacs is a reputable (if small) vendor, if they say it will work it probably will. I would STRONGLY recommend that any computer running OS X that is that slow in terms of processing power be fitted with as much RAM as possible and the fastest, largest hard drive you can afford (actually two -- an external to back up the internal) to ensure a smooth experience.

I've decided to just get the OSX 10.3 retail. That way, when I get a mac for *me* I'll have it. :-) It is already equiped with a 40mg harddrive, dvd, and 256k memory, which I'll bump up to 512 or more if I need to.

I don't think I'd bother with iLife then. The only part such a child would probably get a lot of use out of is iTunes, and you can have that for free. I imagine they'd have a lot of fun watching the visual plug-ins that come with (and are available for) iTunes and the music you put on it.

Thanks. I'd already decided against it on the advice of several list members with the same opinion. I didn't realize exactly what iLife was at first. In Windows, you need a softwear program to play DVD's. I was thinking that iDVD was that softwear, plus I thought she might get some fun out of iPhoto. I knew iTunes is free. I'm getting an education, slowly. :-)

You'll probably want to stick to mostly developmental games/ edutainment titles, most of which should run just fine in Classic and/ or OS X native. What else do you plan to do with the machine?

That's it. Educational programs for my daughter, Appleworks for her typing, and surf places like primarygames.com and barbie.com. It will be her machine, I'm planning a bigger, better one for me. :-)

Thanks again,

Trish
