It happens all the time.. ;-) even to me -  the last time yesterday evening

So I've disconnected everything ( RAM, HD, VRAM, PRAM Battery) for at least
half an hour / press the CUDA ... then build everything in and start from a
Disc with OS 9 (with "C" Button while start up) and tataaaa the iMac works
again... sometimes I have to do it 2 or 3 times to bring the iMac  to live
again.

Then do a fresh install to OS9.2.2 and updated the firmware and update the
VRAM also (at www.ati.com)

The best thing when upgrading to X is with only 1 RAM stick in the iMac
(128MB at least, better 256MB RAM)
