Thanks for the replies. I also found this link which appears to be an thorough diagnostic of the issue:

http://mrjcd.com/gileskennedy/iMac_firmware_problem_v1_2.pdf

Like Dean, the author suggests disconnecting everything, but leaving for 24 hours, and with some detailed procedures when adding everything back in. I'm going to leave the machine for at least an hour, try it again, and if that doesn't work go with the 24 hours and see if that helps.

Thanks again

It happens all the time.. ;-) even to me - the last time yesterday evening

So I've disconnected everything ( RAM, HD, VRAM, PRAM Battery) for at least half an hour / press the CUDA ... then build everything in and start from a Disc with OS 9 (with "C" Button while start up) and tataaaa the iMac works again... sometimes I have to do it 2 or 3 times to bring the iMac to live
again.

Then do a fresh install to OS9.2.2 and updated the firmware and update the
VRAM also (at www.ati.com)

The best thing when upgrading to X is with only 1 RAM stick in the iMac
(128MB at least, better 256MB RAM)
