In my experience LaCie are nothing but trouble.  They make great monitors but
drives and support suck.  We had an ethernet drive that would work properly 
under
OSX yet the box said it would.  We also have a LaCie tape drive that misbehaves
all the time - its a nightmare.

Personally I would drop kick it out of the window and buy a generic firewire 
case
and slap a drive into it.  I paid £15 for my external case and it has worked
flawlessly even through Panther to Tiger to Panther back to Tiger, it works and
everything stays on it.

Not much help I know but just a word of warning.
