I'm confused pls. Sort me out.
Several sources indicate you can't repair permissions on the boot
volume using the Disk Utility on the booted disk. Advice is to
use the install disk, etc. This is said to be particularly important
before downloading software updates. However, "the advice" goes on
to say that after downloading an update, permissions should again be
repaired, this time from the onboard Disk Utility.
Is this correct and if so why the different source for Disk Utility?
Maybe its all the turkey fogging the thinking process.
Several sources have it that the world is flat. Go figure.
You most certainly can and SHOULD repair permissions on the boot
volume using the Disk Utility on the booted disk, it is the only way
I've done it.
While you can do permissions repair before and after an install I
usually only do it if I encounter a problem.
