Our G4 iMac HD crashed but not before I backed it up to external HD using carbon copy cloner.

CCC - turning a disaster into an annoyance. :-)

Now the iMac is returned with a new HD and a fresh copy of OS X 10.2.8 installed. The apple genius tried to restore stuff from the original HD and made a folder that contains about 30% of what was there. (Didn't, for instance, capture Quickbooks or some other important apps)

However, the backup on external HD seems complete.

I'm looking at all this and wondering what's best to do.
Has anyone been through this procedure and have a checklist on what to do in what order?

What I did was: boot from the FW drive; run Carbon Copy Cloner, choosing the FW drive as source and the internal HD as target, and making sure "Make bootable" was checked in preferences; get some lunch while ~30GB of files copied; choose the internal drive as startup disk; restart. There was my familiar desktop, with login items, user preferences, keychains, cookies, email filters etc all present and correct.

I ran software update (I run 10.3.9) just in case there'd been any security updates, and copied some recent files from my other Mac, and that was that.

In your case, I'd hang on to the folder with the recovered files, just in case there's anything in there that's newer than the full backup you made. But you shouldn't have any problems just cloning the clone back to your iMac.

Miche.
