I haven't gotten a sense of what % of Rev. D iMacs can/cannot address 256 MB in one or both of their slots. I know that my father's saw all 512.

My advice find a shop that sells RAM with a return policy and buy two
256 MB DIMMS and try it. If it doesn't work send one back and buy a 128
MB DIMM

Since it sounds like there are several machines, you could order 2 256 MB chips and try them in each machine, and keep track of which slots they work in. Then order enough more 256s for those where they work, and 128s for the rest. But that's a LOT of opening cases, pulling off processors, & reassembling! So it would be way easier to do as suggested above, leave in the chips that are fully recognized, and pull & replace those that aren't.

The savings of using a 128 instead of a 256 that's only half- recognized would be about $15 per chip:
