Please clarify the model you expect to purchase. A G5 is a G5, not an Intel machine. Assuming you are leaping foward into an OS X 10.5 Leopard system on either machine, it would be best if you would provide a list of the applications which produced your files, including full names and version numbers. If you have kept files since '91, there could be problems translating some of them. Files from old ClarisWorks versions, Microsoft Word 5.2, or Reunion 4 for example. I am still in the process of making the same move as you contemplate. I have a few problems, one resolved, and two others which I don't really care to pursue. Initially, Leopard did not recognize files that I had saved from Internet Explorer in HTML format. They were labeled in Kind as "UNIX Executable File." I fixed that when I installed Internet Explorer 5.2, opened one of the files and then instructed the system in Get Info to open all files of that type with IE 5.2. Now those files enjoy an IE icon. I have a few files from 1993. AppleWorks 6 recognizes some as AppleWorks documents, but report an IO error. These were originally created in an early version of ClarisWorks. iWorks Pages does not open them either. I have not tried to resolved this with MacLinkPlus. Other files from 1993 are Simple Text items, being screen shots. They will not open in TextEdit or anything else that I have tried. In checking these 1993 files in my OS 9.2 system, I see that I do not need them in the new system. All other files that we have dating back to 1995 are no problem. We have kept some up to date via upgrades in their application, converting them as we upgraded the application, specifically Reunion. AppleWorks 6 is handling ClarisWorks files from that time.
