I STRONGLY urge you to back up everything now, as in my experience
this is only going to get worse, until your Mac won't boot at all.

I have just gone through this with my late-2006 iMac, which is under
AppleCare.

After three unsuccessful attempts to repair my iMac over the last four
weeks (attempts that included a new optical drive, a new video card,
and a new motherboard), Apple is throwing in the towel and sending me
a replacement.

FYI, one thing I have learned (besides the value of AppleCare) is that
inability of your machine to boot does not necessarily mean that you
have no access to the hard disk. Mine will no longer start up off the
internal HD, an external cloned HD, or the install DVD, but it will
start up in FireWire Target Mode, and I was able to copy all my files
off before handing it over to FedEx.
