Your problem is hardware related. Though Simon's idea was good, it would 
not solve it, as you've learnt. You could, if you wish, find out how to 
get your hands on one of those testing discs-I don't now recall their 
proper names...too early, no coffee yet....anyway, someone here would 
name them. I think with them, you could tell which hardware part is 
malfunctioning. Meanwhile, stop using that machine until you get your 
new HD and hopefully you're able to backup before it dies, if it indeed 
does and is not fixed. You may play around with some of the ram as well. 
Take some out, use some, swap them, etc. It may be easier, when you do 
backup, to do so with the HD in your computer now, installed in an 
external case, as you'd bet it would freeze during the backup if you do 
the backup using your local network, if you have one. Simon sorry to 
hear of your loss.
