I'm presuming we're talking about a slot-load because the tray-loads
won't accept 1 gig of memory and used those idiotic SO-DIMMs that I
don't believe ever came in 512.

Bottom line is that it sounds like one or both of the DIMMs are bad.
The iMac is pretty forgiving about the 168-pin DIMMs it'll take as
long as they're PC100 or PC133. PC66 won't cut it. I've mixed CL2 and
CL3, so I doubt the memory is out of spec.

Try booting with one of them. If that doesn't work, swap out for the
other one. If that doesn't work, there's not a whole lot you can do.
There is no "adaptation period". The firmware will instantly recognize
how much RAM it has on startup and should "gong" is everything is
kosher.

When installing memory, take care to ground yourself beforehand, as
the ICs are highly static sensitive.
