My G3 iMac suffers a similar problem which I've mentioned a couple of 
times but repeat for your edification :) -
One 512 mb stick in either slot works fine.
The other 512 mb stick in either slot works fine.

With both of them in the computer won't boot UNTIL I press the button on 
the side which is marked with the triangle then the computer comes to 
life and the system reports 1 gig of memory (but there is no 'dong' when 
it comes to life).

Someone else with this problem was going to try this trick but he has 
not reported back.
