Since I believe you mentioned that she works in a university, that might be a good idea. .docx is rapidly becoming standard, and she'll have greater compatibility with different academic files and such coming from people who have '07 or '08. It is very different, though, and there are some disadvantages; however, I've been pretty happy overall with '08 since they released a big update to fix a whole bunch of very annoying glitches. They did cut some functionality, but mostly from more advanced programming options in Excel. Word and Powerpoint are almost the same as far as I can tell, but with a different menu layout.
