I think the book market must be targeting at least two different types of
needs:
1) When reading for pleasure I like to have in my hand the book for a few
minutes before buying it. I like to pick one of two pages at random to see
whether (a) I understand the text and (b) the writing style satisfies my
preferences.
2) However, when I am reading to keep myself up to speed in my profession
I do not actually care about easiness of language and/or style of writing.
Anyway I am almost obliged to read the text and I do not do it necessarily
for pleasure (although I try to do that as much as possible!). In such
cases I do not necessarily need to hold the book in my hands, but simply
to find a cheaper and speedy way to get the text.
If this is the case for other people, then maybe there is still future for
the two distribution channels: real and virtual bookstores.
Cheers,
Luca
