Web mail is a very tricky area, much more than just SMTP/POP3 or even
IMAP. The browser versions get involved, attachments with diverse
encodings get involved, both sending and receiving to the
browser. Plus the server side with a web mail CGI application scales
very poorly compared to plain SMTP/POP3.

I wonder sometimes if Ipswitch realized what they were getting into
with Web Messaging, that it would be so popular, with some ISP's
apparently offering web mail exclusively a la Hot Mail and expecting
it to scale well to 10's of 1000's of users?

Beyond making Web messaging less browser-sensitive and more robust in
attachment handling, a possible answer to the performance pb is to
move the web mail app off of the mailbox server to a dedicated web
mail server and have web messaging talk to the Imail mailboxes via
POP3 or IMAP like other web mail solutions do. This would allow as
many web msging satellite servers as needed to handle a given load,
without bogging down the main Imail machine. Maybe for Imail7 next year.

The govt is trying to do something about monopoly profits and abuse
of power at MS, but a whole lot of people like to be coerced in
spoiling MS with billions in guaranteed, exorbitant gross margins.

Does anybody know from experience how well MailSite, Vircom, or
CommuniGate Pro do web messaging??
