yep, that's a valid approach. pre-empt the mail abuse before the
abusers get you.

Are these discussion lists (several or many msgs per day times the
number of list members) or just announce lists with one msg per day or week?

I've personally know the guys who designed the Instant Instant box
before Nortel networks bought them to get that box several years ago
when it was aimed only a putting ipx nets onto tcp/ip Internet.
They have now moved it to a full access box, with DMZ, auto-sense
10/100 switch built in, packet filtering, GUI and telnet and
out-of-band management, stats, VPN with IPsec, etc.

I'd recommend the 100-s which I think is under $500. Put your IMGate
in the DMZ. and Imail on the "inside" with port mapping to it.
But there are plenty of other boxes in the class of machine from Cisco, etc.
