It depends on what you want to achieve.
I have several domains, and for some of the small ones (like mine) I dont
use an external database.
However, for another domain in which I allow users to create their own
account names, I use an external database because:
1) it allows an ASP page to automaticallt create a new account by easily
first checking whether an account exists, and then just inserting a record
into the ODBC database, which creates the account
2) it allows me to easily administer the domain - if I wanted to, I could
change all the flags accross all the users, or the amount of space allowed,
or max messages etc. Sure You can do that from within IMAIL admin, but here
you have more control - you might run an update query on some records, and
so on and so on.
Basically, and external database gives you much more control if you want to
have many accounts.
Additionally, if you want to automate certain tasks (like new account
creation etc) then this is definitely the way to go.

I love this product.
My mistake was that I was trying to put in passwords somewhere in the
registry under Ipswitch (seperating the DSN name from the userid by "/").
After your sugestion, I went into IMAIL admin, and yes, after the DSN name,
i put in ";UID=user;PWD=password;" and it all started working.
