I appreciate your insight on this. I think we're best served by having both
at this point but I don't see us paying ipswitch for an SA at the current
price. I'd rather invest it in Smartermail at this point which is what we're
doing.

I think the key difference for us is that smartermail will deliver a FINAL
product and fix it if necessary, based on what I've read, whereas ipswtich
wants to string you along so they keep getting your SA money. Your statement
about most people not needing the support was long before 2006 was released
to us. This nightmare began when ICS came along.

I think they'll both be the same money over time but I've had enough of 60
minute hold times for support that's bundled in an SA. I also don't like
multiple upgrades (dice rolling) during the year. We shouldn't have to be
buying another solution either. IMHO - ipswitch got trumped by a leaner
company that builds a better product.

Thanks,

Bill,

SmarterMail has it's lumps too, and I don't really care for their new CEO
and the way that he interacts with his customers, nor their support. I
don't believe it is a simple black and white choice. The prices are also
comparable on upgrades considering that SmarterMail charges for support and
they don't give any upgrade protection plans at all. So if you buy 2 months
before a release and want to use the release, you must purchase it again.
IMail also covers additional minor version releases once you qualified for
the base (i.e. if you get 9.2 under SA, you also get 9.21, 9.22, etc.).
SmarterMail comes out with a new full version yearly and stops supporting
the previous version when this happens. It's a stupid way to sell software.
For new licenses though, certainly SmarterMail is a lot cheaper.

I would hope that Ipswitch would rethink their policies here and come out
with a pricing mechanism that doesn't discourage new purchases by being too
high. They should have at least a reasonably priced entry level otherwise
they will be working primarily on an old customer base. I don't think it
would be a bad idea either to charge for support separately, and replace the
SA with a upgrade protection plan at a lower price. There are many of us
that don't need to use support, and support costs were blamed for doubling
the cost of the SA's.

As far as IMail goes as a product, they have been lagging somewhat in
releasing new functionality and polishing up what's there, namely in terms
of the Safari support, but I believe that things are improving and Kevin has
been listening and reaching out. IMail is not a bad product, but they are
falling behind in some areas depending on your exact needs. The new Webmail
was a nice step, just took too long to polish up and some things can still
be done better (like permissions). I can think of some other areas that
would help them a lot in the general market, but that depends on where they
wish to target their product. SmarterMail for instance is heavy into
hosting control panels, but this customer base is probably generally a pain
to support, especially when a lot of the management happens through another
app. I can understand not having too much interest in that market, though a
growing customer base in itself certainly helps to promote the product.

Anyway, I just thought that I would chime in with my opinions about both.
They are both decent products in their own regard, but they both have warts.

Matt

My faith in installing ipswitch upgrades has been demolished. Good luck with
that. They'll help you but it shouldn't be as bad as it's been for us. Brand
new machine specifically bought for 2006 and have had too many problems to
count. It's stable now and I plan on leaving it that way and have bought
another server for smartermail. I just can't risk my customers for Ipswitch
anymore.

Nope... had a long talk with them last week. They did put us on a 90-day
delist to allow time for 2006.2 to be released and us to upgrade, but there
is no permanent list any longer. In our case that's enough since we will be
planning the upgrade soon after 2006.2 is released.

Read the last 4 words in that message and I think you can call them back.

Yep, we found that out last week. They must have changed their policy just
before we talked to them, and changed their email text just afterwards.

Marc,

Apparently they no longer do this, here is the first line of the email they
sent me:

[Note: if you have received messages from us about IPSwitch/IMail before,
please note that IPSwitch has finally implemented a workaround.
Please see below. We will no longer be perm-delisting IMail installations
unless there's no alternative.]

Joel, mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask to remove the entry from the list
permanently, because of using imail.

but be aware what Matt told you about vulnerable versions of IMail...

I'm just trying to figure out which direction to go from here.
