Or... do I need the host file to point to 'itself' for the domains even if
I'm not relaying?

I'm a little confused by page 26 from the 6.0 manual. It
refers to the host
file as such:
127.0.0.1 localhost 'this is normal
156.21.50.5 mail.domain.com 'this is forwarding mail
coming to
mail.domain.com to another server
'add the following line
156.21.50.5 'this is forwarding mail coming to
domain.com to the same
server
What if I am not using a server as a relay and mail is
coming directly to
the IMAIL server? Just change the name inside Imail admin?
Also is it generally recommended that you use a smtp relay
to relieve the
main server of those duties?

Bryan,
Only warning I can give, is when you change
the 'Official
Host Name', then
click Save, IMail will ask if you are
creating a new domain,
you MUST
answer, NO. Answer yes, and it will now have
2 domains and
that is not what
you want! If you do expect mail to be
addressed in any other
form, you might
want to add the 'old OHN' to the Alias
field, before you
click the Save
button.
You could accomplish the same thing [IMail
accepting either
form of address]
with adding the 'domain.com' as the Alias,
in the Host
Configuration screen,
and not changing the OHN. With Scott's
answer about the
hosts file (when
this is the Primary IP of the computer),
that is all there
is to do for
IMail.
Of course, DNS changes might also be needed.
I did not check
yours, so do
not know exactly what you have.
Gee, I think this is pretty easy overall!
Yea, you have to
check a few
things, perform a few steps, but no more
than you would if
you were setting
up any other IP based domain.
But if you want another way to do it, you
could by editing
the registry. A
bit harder to explain, but actually pretty
easy to 'rename'
a domain.
Lastly, it is ALWAYS a good idea to backup
the registry
before undertaking
'major' changes to domains. Means you can go
back to what
you had, if
something or someone messes up.
BTW, about the only time the 'reply to'
address is used, is
from Web
Messaging (normal POP3/IMAP4 clients set it
and use what
they 'know' when
constructing the message). And, if you have
your DNS set
correctly, it
really does not make any difference to the
actual delivery
of email. Does it
really make a difference that you can send
me email at
either
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and
both get to me??
Worst effect I have seen (from the outside
looking in) is
that I get 2 email
addresses for you, but both work.
