While I've never had an IMail "down time" incident, I can suggest
the following we looked at before purchasing IMail:

Sendmail. On FreeBSD or Linux, not the ancient port to the NT.
Price is right, pain in the butt to configure and reconfigure.

SLMail. I actually beta tested the original incarnation of this one,
and it's pretty decent. Uses the Blackhole filter list, but wasn't as
fast nor had as many features as IMail.

NTMail. Pretty decent, has add-ons (robots I think they called
them) to do most anything. Kind of slow though.

MailSite. This one is hot, but kind of expensive (not that IMail is
frugal). The top line version has a SQL connector if you use SQL
for the user database.

Mercur. Also used ODBC connectors to databases. Had some of
the niftyest logging since it goes to your own database, but wasn't
the fastest performer.

Try ServerWatch (http://www.serverwatch.com/) for a good list of
what's available.
