The cable modem comes with the cable subscription in nearly all 
cases.  Over-the-counter purchase is too much of a pig in the poke.

The cable modem is just an cable-to-ethernet converter.  Your cable company 
will assign you IP address by DHCP, generally.  Imail and most mail servers 
need a fixed ip address, and 250-user would be kind of expensive just for 
home.
