Well I would like to know why several other ISP companies using Imail have
been put on the RBL and they said that this would not work. Any ideas?
Also how can you configure imail to bounce e-mail instead of eating it when
a user does not exist?

sounds like "POP-before-SMTP". ie, successfully logging into your POP3
mailbox, the ip you logged in from is temporarily added to a dynamic "relay
for addresses" list for some period like 15 or 30 minutes. During that
time, the SMTPD server accepts for relay any message sent from that ip,
just as Imail does via SMTP AUTH. POP before SMTP is a clever, useful,
effective kludge but it is not RFC, where SMTP AUTH is RFC and so more
generally applicable.
Note that POP-before-SMTP is also nice because it places no technical
requirements on the mail client pgm. All you need to be able to do is POP3,
and then SMTP send, without SMTP LOGIN.

It doesn't prevent spam (distinguish spam as a payload from
"hijacking/relaying spam through a server", but it does prevent relaying
from ip's, any ip in the world, that haven't been authenticated in the last
X minutes by a successful POP3 login, while allowing authentic users to
roam wherever and still send mail.
