again, this is the advantage of having different hostnames in DNS for 
each service, rather than all services, myopically, behind mail.domain.com

pop.domain.com      A  ip.ad.re.ss
smtp.domain.com     MX mail.domain.com
webmail.domain.com  A  ip.ad.re.ss
imap.domain.com     A  ip.ad.re.ss
mail.domain.com     A  ip.ad.re.ss

Initially, in the most simple setup, ip.ad.re.ss would be the same 
ip, but as services like virus scanning machines, 3rd party webmail 
servers, or dedicated mail gateways were provided by different 
machines, only the ip's change, not the users' mail settings.
