This is a bug that is corrected in version 6.03

This isn't something that is handled on the server. The mail client uses
MIME to encode the 8-bit characters (plain old SMTP only uses 7 bits). The
encoded characters might look like what you described above. The mail
client is then responsible for displaying the encoded characters correctly.
