better security, complete logging (stats, attacks, abuse),
blackholing, NOTIFY slave of updates (quicker synchronization),
$INCLUDE and $TTL for the zone files. Many more config possibilities
in the master config file, but it can be kept really simple if that suffices.

BIND 4.9.5 non-commercial was reputed to be pretty insecure, but
maybe software.com fixed the holes without changing the version number.

>Is this an upgrade to the same version of Bind that I am running
>or is this a different flavor? Is mine THAT far out of date?

A couple of years. BIND8 has been out about 3 years. BIND 4.9.7 for
NT from Larry Kahn was released in early 1999, I think. BIND 9.01 is
released, BIND 9.1 is nearing beta. BIND 8.2.3 is due soon. The
oficial release of BIND8 is 8.2.2 p7.

>It was hard enough to figure out Bind for NT the first time. Bind 8 looks
>quite a bit different and uses less English then the 4.9.5 version.

Same concepts. The BIND4 zone files are forward comaptible so you can
use them under BIND8, but without nice labor/error savers like $INCLUDE.

I'm expect you'll get better support from the ISC-BIND mailing list
for free than you got from software.com. There's lots of BIND8
expertise around now.

But if you are a light user of DNS, the BIND4 is still ok and used by
a lot of people.
