Why do you wonder?
NT hosts records and DNS A records provide the same service: the
mapping of a hostname and an ip addresses

That's correct, the NT hosts file is used by Imail to know IF a "RCTP
TO: @domain" is to be accepted for relaying and WHERE to relay to.
>I assume that the HOSTS file will ONLY be used by Imail,
It will be used by all NT applications that do DNS lookups with winsock calls.
>and that Imail will check the HOSTS file before checking DNS,
It will. Checking hosts files before looking DNS is the convention
for both NT and *nix machines.

Yep, but what other tcp/ip applications are you using on the NT Imail machine?

If you have browser on the NT Imail machine and try to browse to
thedomain_name.com
It will go to 123.123.123.123. can't avoid that.
So just remember to browse to
www.thedomain_name.com
so the browser will NOT find that domain in hosts file, and will do a
DNS lookup.
