Use ispclean.exe (RTFM) to clean out all files older than some date, 
but zip/move your log file of interest to another directory.   also see the KB

Large spool directories with 100's or 1000's of files can really slow 
down sending/receicving/delivering mail by all the Imail processes as 
traversing the directory and file allocation map become horrendous.

No OS can escape from this.
