The only non standard thing we have is we validate against an Oracle 8i DB
using a modified version of the IMail ODBC connector dll that we have been
using since August last year. We have 5000 mailboxes, over the last month
this has been growing at around 750 mailboxes a week

Is this with SSL? If you are using SSL, it needs to be reset once in a
while.

The other possibility is a crash, where .TMP files are left behind each time
it happens. If so, check the .TMP files to see what user was on, and what
was happening at the time of the crash.
