They likely just don't know better.  In the beginning, you were *supposed* to be an 
open relay; that's just how it worked.  The only reason for closing them (but a good 
enough reason to justify just about any reason NOT to close them) now is because of 
spam.  Maybe some of them haven't been burnt enough yet.

But, I've just checked our spam database, and only see less than 1% coming from .edu's.
