All you can do is bug IMail to fix it.

No. The problem is with remote domains that are correctly set up, where
the domain ("example.com") has one or more MX records (IE, "example.com MX
10 mail.example.com"), and also an A record ("example.com A
127.0.0.1"). The A record is often used so people don't have to use "www."
to get to the web site (they can go to example.com rather than
www.example.com).
If the domain *is* set up incorrectly -- and there is no MX record for
example.com, then IMail should try the A record. But, if the MX records
exist, it should never, under any circumstances, use the A record.
The problem is noticeable these days for two reasons: [1] People are more
likely to add an A record for just "example.com", and [2] Microsoft
installs SMTP servers on web servers, even though most shouldn't have SMTP
servers. If the web server doesn't respond, you won't notice the IMail bug.
We had to get rid of the A record for declude.com (our web host controlled
our DNS at that point, and they had the A record there), after getting some
semi-nasty messages such as "I just tried to E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] but
it bounced!", because of this IMail bug.

That depends on how you define stupid. "stupid" might be someone who pays
to use a service that a spammer will soon be using for free.
"Relay for Addresses" (or "No mail relay", which should really be named
"Relay only for authenticated users") is the best option.

That's where you have your customers use SMTP AUTH. That way, their mail
client will authenticate them before sending the mail.
