Recently, the issue of the IMail "A record bug" has come up again. The
problem is that IMail will sometimes try connecting to the A record of a
domain, even though MX record(s) exist. This is not allowed by the RFCs,
and can cause intermittent problems (such as mail bouncing, or never
reaching its destination).
However, the release notes for v7.03 mention something that makes it seem
as though this may be fixed. And, I can't recall having seen this issue
occur since we upgraded to 7.03.
I can't say that it definitely is fixed, because it was random, and the
description of the fix is "A-record handling in SMTP was changed to meet
the requirements of the new RFC (2822)." However, they are likely
referring to RFC2821 instead of RFC2822 (which has no mention of DNS or A
records), and RFC2821 did not make any changes to A record handling (in
fact, it claims to have made NO changes whatsoever). Since they're being
sneaky in disclosing that there was a problem in the first place, they
aren't letting us know whether or not this known (and pretty serious)
problem has been fixed.
But, unless we hear otherwise from someone who experiences this on 7.03, I
think it is safe to assume that the issue is finally resolved.
