first of all, peruse the newsgroup comp.dcom.xdsl and you'll find that Verizon DSL is bad, very bad when it comes to support. I'm willing to bet that the solution given is wrong. He's lucky he didn't get the usual answer that 1 your HDD needs to be defragged and that the c:\windows\temp folder needs to be emptied.
I have Verizon DSL and for the past lifetime or so, Email and news have been, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent, a 1. This is due the the facts that 1) their DNS servers have a hard time resolving their own mail and new servers, and 2) their MTBF has been very high over the past few months. If you have access to another SMTP outgoing server, use it. Oh and BTW, call Verizon and complain about the bad service, ask for a month's credit, and you'll get it no questions asked.
