Yes, you can examine that file. It does contain a flag showing whether or
not the message has been read. I deciphered most of the file a while back,
so it is possible.
However, that file is proprietary and undocumented, so glitches could come
up sometimes, and a change in version could cause it to break (the format
changed from v6 to v7).
