These   guys  are  right,  this  can  happen.  I  managed  to  get  my
virtual/real host config screwed up one of my boxes a few days ago and
the  same  thing  started  happening. I've never seen it spontaneously
happen,  though--I was definitely manipulating something in the GUI or
Registry right before.

The exact error message is quite bizarre, as you will soon see! At any
rate,  deleting  and  rebuilding  my  hosts  (granted,  only 5 on that
machine) solved the problem.

Note  mail.megapathdsl.net  is  the remote gateway, swhitema obviously
local user.
