I have seen a problem, if the client is set to check for mail every minute and is trying to download a large message that takes longer than 1 minute to download. If it tries to check while it's still downloading, it will abort the download and either mess up, or start over. Try setting the auto-check interval to either off or 60 minutes or something and then try again.
