Here is our solution.

1.  Manually set mail client to it's maximum server time out (5 minutes if
your using a MS Outlook based product.

2.  Set the system to check for Email no less than every 15 minutes.

3.  Show/teach/hand hold clients through using the web mail interface to
review and delete all messages already down loaded.

4.  Have customer check out the biggest Email message in their in-box, based
on total lines.  Have them review it, save the attachment, it's almost
always the attachment that's the problem.

5.  Log  off of the web interface and then see if their mail client can
download the rest of their Emails.

Usually it's either baby pictures or that dammed "Joe Cartoon".  Curse you
Joe, if your shockwave cartoons weren't so amusing, I'd be pissed.
