When he is traveling how does he connect to the Internet? Is he using an ISP with access numbers all over the place or is he calling long distance? The reason I ask is because even if you enable smtp auth (which is a good thing) he still may not be able to reach your mail server on port 25 because most ISPs block port 25 except to their own mail servers. In that case the email clients need to be configured to use the SMTP server of their ISP with a reply to address of the regular domain. Another good alternative is Web mail.
