Sorry...yes...the domain names were changed to protect the innocent.
I'll turn the logs up and try again later then post the results.  The
domain really does have several backup mail servers (I know because
I'm tangentally involved in their network stuff but do not do their
DNS).  I can assure you that the REAL mail server is the smtp1 box
represented here and the other two backups (smtp2 and smtp3) are
sendmail boxes which are doing store and forward.  The last time the
preference 10 machine was down, I did turn up the logs and found that
Imail ONLY tried sending to smtp2 and ignored the preferred box smtp1.

More to come after I get back from personal life duties this
morning....  ;-)
