it is the client you are using that has to be compatible, I tried to use one of the authentication methods myself that outlook does not support, my settings for IMail are, SMTP>relay mail for addresses, with my domain listed and other domains that are legit, however if you are using outlook, you can have outlook supply the password, this makes IMail consider the session as local, go to the tools menu, then accounts>>properties for the mail account> click on the servers tab then select the box that says, my server requires authentication, then apply and OK, and you can send mail to external addresses, this will at least make it where those that do not supply an account password cant send mail out thru your server, but it wont stop anyone from sending to accounts ON your server, you'll need and anti-spam gateway to help with that kind of junk, like IMGate or Declude
