There's one spammer-for-hire (someone who gets paid to send massive amounts
of illegal spam) that has literally thousands of servers under his control
-- not just open relays, but servers that have been compromised. We have a
list of something like 600 different servers he's broken into. Worse, it
seems that he has constant access to new compromised servers -- it seems
that as some start to get blocked, he starts using new ones.
The reason he uses so many servers is so that he can send the E-mail to
thousands and thousands of made-up addresses -- just like a dictionary
attack, except that his goal is for a small percentage of the E-mail to be
delivered (as opposed to harvesting addresses).
